Grid Delivery
A snapshot of some key grid infrastructure deliveries from around the country
Collaboration across the industry is crucial as we work towards our energy targets and bring more renewable energy onto the grid.
On this page, we'll share some highlights as we strengthen Ireland's grid.
EirGrid, along with ESB Networks, has completed the full uprate of the Glenree–Moy 110 kV circuit in the north west.
This uprate will increase the rating and capacity of the conductor, reinforcing the grid's ability to transmit more energy from the western region, and helping deliver additional renewable power to homes and businesses across the country.
Kildare-Meath
Significant alterations were recently made to the existing Maynooth-Ryebrook and Dunfirth-Kinnegad-Rinawade 110 kV double circuit lines in Kildare and Meath.
EirGrid, along with ESB Networks, worked to deliver this complex circuit diversion, which will facilitate a customer’s plans for future expansion of their manufacturing campus.
Galway
The final major steps in the redevelopment of the Galway City 110 kV substation project were recently completed, after the final transfers from the old Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) station to the new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) station were accomplished.
This work included the transfer of circuits from Knockranny, Salthill and Cashla substations, and marks a major step towards reinforcing the electricity grid in the Galway region.
Offaly
EirGrid has recently completed the uprate of the Derryiron 110 kV Station Busbar, located in Co Offaly, marking a significant upgrade to the electricity system in the Midlands.
The uprate of the Derryiron 110 kV busbar is a major factor in facilitating several planned customer connections projects to connect a total of over 264 MW of renewable energy to the grid.
Cork
EirGrid recently completed protection works at a number of substations across Co Cork.
Ageing protection relays in Coolroe, Inniscarra and Macroom 110 kV substations were replaced, ensuring a continued reliable supply of electricity to the region.
Such protection systems are crucial to ensuring safety and maintaining system reliability by quickly isolating faults and preventing widespread damage to equipment.
These protection system enhancement works are required to ensure compliance with best practice in transmission system protection policy.
Dublin
The final major element of the Corduff 220 kV Station Deep Reinforcement Project was recently completed in collaboration with ESB Networks, marking a significant upgrade to the electricity system in North Dublin.
Dublin
EirGrid recently completed diversion works on the Poolbeg-Inchicore No.1 220 kV cable circuit in Dublin.
This circuit is critical to facilitate the construction of the new 110 kV Gas Insulated Substation at Ringsend, which will replace the existing Air Insulated Substation.

Donegal
EirGrid completed works to uprate the Binbane to Cathleen Falls 110 kV circuit in Co Donegal in December 2024, adding 64.4 MW capacity to the grid in the region
Maynooth - Woodland
EirGrid completed uprate works on the Maynooth to Woodland 220 kV line in December 2024, ensuring a continued secure energy supply for the greater Dublin area.
This work was necessary to facilitate essential maintenance of the 400 kV and 220 kV network.
Waterford
The Rathnaskilloge 110 kV Station in Co Waterford became one of our latest Renewable Electricity Support Scheme 2 projects to be connected to the electricity grid.
This December delivery also included the energisation of Rathnaskillloge Solar Farm, which will support an additional 95 MW in export capacity once fully operational.
Kildare
November 2024 saw EirGrid energising Timahoe 110 kV Station and Timahoe North Solar Farm in Co Kildare on the transmission system, securing an additional 70 MW of renewable generation onto the national grid.
