Busbar uprate in Co Offaly to help facilitate more renewables

The site in Derryiron

EirGrid has recently completed the uprate of the Derryiron 110 kV Station Busbar, located in Co Offaly, marking a significant upgrade to the electricity system in the Midlands.

In collaboration with ESB Networks and ESB Engineering and Major Projects, these works included decommissioning the existing 110 kV busbar, a control room extension, protection relay upgrades, and the installation of temporary network bypasses, a new 110 kV busbar, and a new 110 kV sectionaliser circuit breaker.

The uprate of the Derryiron 110 kV busbar is a major factor in facilitating several planned customer connections projects to connect a total of over 264 MW of renewable energy to the grid.

This vital upgrade will also unlock additional capacity for renewable energy to connect to the grid, bringing us closer to meeting Ireland’s renewable energy targets.
