Galway substation works allow for more renewables and stronger local grid

Works at the GIS in Galway

The final major steps in the redevelopment of the Galway City 110 kV substation project were recently completed, after the final transfers from the old Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) station to the new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) station were accomplished.

This work included the transfer of circuits from Knockranny, Salthill and Cashla substations, and marks a major step towards reinforcing the electricity grid in the Galway region.

The upgrade has facilitated the connection of an additional 65 MW of wind energy, and has also created access to 229 MW of energy on the transmission system for generation projects in the area.

This project is significant in enabling wind farms in west Galway to export their energy to the rest of the county, strengthening local energy supply and contributing towards Ireland's climate action targets.

Thanks to our colleagues at ESB Networks and ESB Engineering and Major Projects for their collaboration in completing this project.
