Our Strategy
Purpose, Strategy & Values
EirGrid’s Purpose, Strategy and Values define who we are, what we aim to achieve, and how we deliver for Ireland. Together, they provide a clear and connected framework to ensure a secure, clean and affordable electricity system, while enabling the transition to a low-carbon future.
As Ireland’s Transmission System Operator, we play a central role in operating the electricity grid, integrating renewable energy, and delivering the infrastructure required to support growing demand and a rapidly evolving energy system.
Our Strategy at a Glance
EirGrid’s 2026–2030 strategy sets out how we will meet increasing electricity demand while transforming the system to support a cleaner energy future.
The strategy ensures we can continue to deliver a resilient and reliable electricity supply, while enabling economic growth and climate ambition.

Our Strategic Pillars
Our strategy is built around four key pillars that define what we will deliver:
Keeping Ireland Powered
Ensuring a safe, secure and reliable electricity system remains our core priority. This includes balancing supply and demand in real time, maintaining system stability, and ensuring resilience as the energy mix becomes increasingly renewable and variable.
Building the Backbone
We are strengthening and expanding the grid to support Ireland’s future needs. This includes developing new infrastructure, enhancing existing assets, and enabling the connection of new demand and generation across the country.
Transforming for Clean Energy
We are evolving how the electricity system operates to enable a low-carbon future. This includes integrating higher levels of renewable generation, adapting market and system operations, and supporting the transition to more flexible and sustainable energy solutions.
Unlocking New Frontiers
We are progressing offshore development and increasing interconnection with neighbouring systems. This will unlock new sources of clean energy, enhance security of supply, and position Ireland as a leader in offshore renewable energy.

Key Enablers
Delivery of our strategy is supported by four key enablers that underpin how we work:
Our People, Our Power
Our people are central to delivering our strategy. We are focused on developing capability, leadership and expertise across the organisation to ensure we can meet the challenges of a growing and changing energy system.
Customers and Stakeholders at the Core
We work closely with customers, communities, industry and policymakers to deliver solutions that support Ireland’s energy future. Strong engagement and collaboration are essential to delivering infrastructure and enabling change at scale.
Digitally Driven
We are leveraging data, digital tools and technology to enhance system operation and decision-making. Digital capability will be critical in managing complexity and enabling a more flexible and efficient electricity system.
Financial Strength for Long-Term Delivery
We are committed to maintaining strong financial foundations to support long-term investment in the grid. This ensures we can deliver essential infrastructure efficiently and sustainably over the lifetime of the strategy.
Our Values
Our values guide how we work, how we make decisions, and how we deliver our strategy.
They shape our culture and ensure we operate as a responsible, trusted and high-performing organisation.
Explore the Full Strategy
The transition to low carbon, renewable energy will have widespread consequences.
There will be major changes in how we generate, use, buy and sell electricity.
The electricity system will carry more power than ever before.
Most of that power will be from renewable sources. Coal, peat and oil-based generation will be phased out in the next decade.
And while this happens, new technology will allow electricity users to generate and store power and return any surplus to the grid.
This creates opportunities for all.
