Operating and Transforming the Grid

EirGrid is responsible for balancing electricity supply and demand every minute of the day from the National Control Centre, while also planning for Ireland’s long-term electricity needs.

This page provides an overview of how EirGrid delivers on its critical role operating a secure and reliable electricity system, and key developments as we work to transform the grid.

Industry Updates

In this section, you'll find the latest key developments and updates for our stakeholders.

EirGrid’s PR6 Business Plan

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has published its Price Review 6 (PR6) Draft Determination, which is now open for consultation prior to a final determination being made.

EirGrid is encouraging its stakeholders to review the summary of its PR6 Business Plan, alongside the draft determination from CRU, and make a submission to the CRU as part of the consultation process.

Call for Submissions: LEU Market Intelligence Exercise

EirGrid has worked collaboratively with ESB Networks and Gas Networks Ireland to prepare a Market Intelligence Exercise with the purpose of gathering information from industry to understand the expectations for future data centre demand over the next 15 years.

This follows a request from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) in its recent publication ‘Large Energy Users Connection Policy Proposed Decision Paper’ which set out, for data centres, a pathway for connection applications to the electricity grid and gas network.

Responses to the Market Intelligence Exercise are intended to feed into policy development by the CRU and to help inform the potential development of a plan-led approach, directed by the CRU, to enable the continued future development of the data centre sector in Ireland.

Our video series, Plugged-In with EirGrid, takes a look at various aspects of the power system, and the data that show how it all works.

We have videos on system demand, the transmission system map, and even how eclipses affect solar output.

Future videos will continue to explore the challenges and solutions associated with operating an ever-evolving power system.
