EirGrid and SciFest welcome the launch of SciFest 2025
Entries for the 20th Annual SciFest Competition close on Wednesday 12 March 2025
EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, has welcomed the launch of SciFest 2025, at Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School, Co Dublin, and is encouraging entries from all students wishing to participate.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the SciFest programme has long been a platform for second-level students to showcase their creativity, innovation and research skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
As a partner in SciFest, EirGrid’s Cleaner Climate Award aims to emphasise the critical role young people play in shaping a sustainable future.
The prize will be awarded to the student or team whose project demonstrates both technical excellence and a tangible positive impact to energy and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the launch, Catherine Daly, Sustainability Programme Manager at EirGrid, said: “For 20 years SciFest has been a centre of innovation for second-level students, and we are incredibly proud to continue to support this endeavour.
“By encouraging young people to explore renewable energy, we are helping foster a generation of problem solvers and critical thinkers, dedicated to creating a greener planet.”
Students will initially present their findings at their school fair, vying for the chance to reach the regional finals, which will take place at third-level institutions across the country, this coming April and May.
A selection of these winners will then go forward to compete at the prestigious SciFest National Final in November 2025.
Following another successful year in 2024, which saw over 15,000 students from schools across Ireland take part, SciFest CEO Sheila Porter is looking forward to celebrating twenty years of the competition.
“SciFest is back for 2025, and we couldn’t be more excited. I would urge all students to get involved and enter, no matter your background or circumstance, to explore the wonderful world of STEM and all it has to offer. Previous winners of the competition are thriving and have gone on to achieve incredible things, from launching their own start-ups to studying at prestigious institutions like Oxford University. SciFest opens the door to an array of opportunities.
“As we plan for our 20-year celebrations, we look forward to an exciting year ahead in which the competition will grow to even greater heights. I want to take a moment to thank our sponsors for their continued support, without which none of this would be possible. We can’t wait to see the fantastic and innovative projects that lie ahead so don’t miss out! Sign up today and be part of this exciting journey.”
