EirGrid supports Irish Coast Guard training off Wexford coast

Helo 5

EirGrid has supported vital Irish Coast Guard helicopter training exercises off the south coast during marine surveys for its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project.

The start of the surveys, which began last month (April), marked the next phase of site investigation works and follows the successful completion of an initial phase of surveys carried out in 2025.

During offshore geophysical survey operations, the survey vessel Kommandor Iona, operated by EirGrid’s appointed survey contractor, Fugro, facilitated a series of helicopter winch training exercises at sea.

When survey operations allowed, the vessel’s captain approved the requests, recognising the importance of maintaining operational readiness for emergency response.

The Irish Coast Guard operates a fleet of six AW189 helicopters, delivering 24/7 search and rescue and emergency response services nationwide. These operations are supported by fixed-wing aircraft and include missions such as maritime rescues, cliff incidents, air ambulance services and emergency medical support.

Training exercises like hovering and winching are critical to ensuring crews can safely and effectively respond to real-life emergencies.
EirGrid welcomed the cooperation, noting the importance of supporting initiatives that strengthen Ireland’s maritime safety capabilities, particularly in busy coastal areas such as Wexford.

Chief Transformation, Technology and Offshore Officer at EirGrid Liam Ryan said: “EirGrid is committed to supporting organisations like the Irish Coast Guard wherever possible. Facilitating exercises like these helps ensure crews can train in realistic offshore conditions, strengthening collaboration and preparedness across all those working to keep people safe at sea. “This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of EirGrid, Fugro, and the Irish Coast Guard to safety, preparedness, and effective emergency response in Irish waters.”

Head of Operations at the Irish Coast Guard, Kevin Whitney, commented:
“Training exercises are a regular and critical factor to ensure a best-in-class emergency response. On behalf of the Irish Coast Guard, I would like to thank EirGrid for supporting our crews in carrying out these offshore exercises. This collaboration highlights the importance of partnership in strengthening maritime safety and protecting lives at sea.”

The Powering Up Offshore - South Coast Programme will see the development of new infrastructure required to bring power generated by wind farms into the national grid. Once delivered, it will see approximately 900 MW of electricity to be supplied from wind farms in the sea off Ireland’s south coast.
