EirGrid reaffirms commitment to delivering ambitious programme to strengthen and build out the grid as it welcomes Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan

Cathal Marley

EirGrid has welcomed the publication of the Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan, saying it is committed to supporting and facilitating the timely delivery of an unprecedented amount of new infrastructure over the coming years to transform Ireland’s power system.

EirGrid is responsible for balancing electricity supply and demand every minute of the day from the National Control Centre, while also strategically planning for Ireland’s long-term electricity needs.

It supported the work of the Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce through the Department of Public Expenditure’s Infrastructure Division.

EirGrid is progressing an ambitious programme of work which includes the delivery of new onshore infrastructure, as well as upgrades and reinforcements to the grid right across the country to ensure it is resilient and renewable ready. It will also have a new role owning and being responsible for offshore transmission assets.

A key element to the delivery of infrastructure is collaboration with landowners and the communities hosting these critical projects. EirGrid’s public engagement strategy involves developing relationships on-the-ground from an early stage, to ensure local views are represented. Community benefit funds are also established to ensure that the local community which hosts infrastructure will directly benefit.

In that context, EirGrid supports the commitment to work with agencies to deliver a co-ordinated national campaign to promote the importance and benefits of infrastructure.

Earlier this year, EirGrid outlined its capital investment for the coming years in its PR6 investment plan, with a final determination to be published in due course by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).

The Government also announced investment in EirGrid through an equity injection to support the delivery of offshore infrastructure, as reflected in the latest National Development Plan and Budget 2026.

Cathal Marley, Chief Executive of EirGrid, said: "The delivery of grid infrastructure is of significant strategic importance for Ireland, as reflected in this report. It is fundamental to unlocking greater energy independence and security, as well as supporting national and regional economic growth and a resilient society.

"Electricity infrastructure is not just about keeping the lights on; it supports the delivery of Government policy and targets in key areas such as housing, climate and industry.

"EirGrid supported the work of the Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce, and we welcome the Government’s commitment to addressing barriers. This will be critical to deliver the significant programme of infrastructure outlined in our PR6 investment plan. We look forward to continued engagement on the Taskforce and with the Government, our regulator, and stakeholders as we continue to power up Ireland.

"In delivering timely and robust infrastructure, we will continue our public engagement strategy, working with those that may be affected by our plans. On each project, we engage with landowners, community representatives, interest groups and local stakeholders. Engaging with the public is essential for our work."
