Ballyshannon students join EirGrid for local beach clean

Rossnowlagh Beach Clean

Pupils from Coláiste Cholmcille in Ballyshannon recently joined a team from EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, for a beach clean in Rossnowlagh.

A total of 57kg of rubbish was collected and disposed of on the day as part of An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme.

Clean Coasts’ Big Beach Clean encourages communities and volunteers around the country to remove litter from Irish coastal areas.

The clean-up was in line with one of the pillars of EirGrid’s Sustainability Strategy of 'Being a Responsible Business' while it works to ensure a more sustainable and secure electricity supply for everyone.

Clean-ups make an important contribution towards preventing litter from being washed towards the sea and help to safeguard the health of our marine life.

Connell McLoone, EirGrid’s Community Liaison Officer for the North West said:

“Beach cleans such as this one in Rossnowlagh show how people can make a real difference to their area and help to protect their environment and reduce local pollution.

“At EirGrid, we are continuously working to embed sustainable and responsible business practices across our day-to-day operations.

“EirGrid is delighted to be able to work with An Taisce in this way and make this small contribution to helping protect the coastline here in Donegal. My thanks to all the students from Coláiste Cholmcille for their help and I look forward to more beach cleans in the North West over the next few months.”

EirGrid will log the data from this beach clean through Clean Coasts Ireland.
